Reduction of a Ship's Magnetic Field Signatures (Synthesis Lectures on Computational Electromagnetics)

Author(s): John J. Holmes
Publisher: Morgan and Claypool Publishers; 1 edition
Date     : 2008
Pages    : 78
Format   : PDF

Language : English

Description:

Decreasing the magnetic field signature of a naval vessel will reduce its susceptibility to detonating naval influence mines and the probability of a submarine being detected by underwater barriers and maritime patrol aircraft. Both passive and active techniques for reducing the magnetic signatures produced by a vessel's ferromagnetism, roll-induced eddy currents, corrosion-related sources, and stray fields are presented. Mathematical models of simple hull shapes are used to predict the levels of signature reduction that might be achieved through the use of alternate construction materials. Also, the process of demagnetizing a steel-hulled ship is presented, along with the operation of shaft-grounding systems, paints, and alternate configurations for power distribution cables. In addition, active signature reduction technologies are described, such as degaussing and deamping, which attempt to cancel the fields surrounding a surface ship or submarine rather than eliminate its source.

HVDC and FACTS Controllers - Applications of Static Converters in Power Systems (Power Electronics and Power Systems)

Publisher: Springer; 1 edition

ISBN-10  : 1402078900
ISBN-13  : 978-140207890

Description:

HVDC and FACTS Controllers: Applications of Static Converters in Power Systems focuses on the technical advances and developments that have taken place in the past ten years or so in the fields of High Voltage DC transmission and Flexible AC transmission systems. These advances (in HVDC transmission and FACTS) have added a new dimension to power transmission capabilities. The book covers a wide variety of topics, some of which are listed below:

+ Current Source and Voltage Source Converters, + Synchronization Techniques for Power Converters, + Capacitor Commutated Converters, + Active Filters, + Typical Disturbances on HVDC Systems, + Simulation Techniques, + Static Var Compensators based on Chain Link Converters, + Advanced Controllers, + Trends in Modern HVDC. In addition to EHV transmission, HVDC technology has impacted on a number of other areas as well. As an example, a chapter dealing with HVDC Light applications is included providing recent information on both on-shore and off-shore applications of wind farms. HVDC and FACTS Controllers: Applications of Static Converters in Power Systems is meant for senior undergraduate, graduate students and professional power systems engineers. Mathematical treatment of the subject has been kept to a minimum and emphasis has been placed on principles and practical applications. Applications from major manufacturers are included to provide useable information for the practicing power systems engineer.

***
The motivation to write this book came from the observation that the technology of High Voltage DC (HVDC) Transmission and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) has evolved much over the past 10 years, and no recent book addressed the developments in these areas in a compact, easily available and readable manner. These new developments came about primarily due to the advances in power electronic switches and microprocessors.
This new book hopes to address a small part of the void that existed in the technical book area. Some words should be said about the title of the book: HVDC and FACTS controllers. Modern thinking and terminology usage dictates that HVDC transmission should now be considered as a part of FACTS controllers. However, a look at the evolution in the field shows that the technology started with HVDC transmission and FACTS controllers came along much later. Hence my choice of the title reflects this.

Description:

Principles of Electronic Materials and Devices, Second Edition, is a greatly enhanced version of the highly successful text Principles of Electrical Engineering Materials and Devices. It is designed for a first course on electronic materials given in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics Departments at the undergraduate level. The second edition has numerous revisions, additional sections such as "Phonons" and "Optoelectronic Materials and Devices", more solved problems, and a completely new chapter on "Optical Properties of Materials". The revisions have improved the rigor without sacrificing the original semiquantitative approach that the students liked. For example, the thermoelectric effect now includes the Mott-Jones index (x) which is normally treated at the graduate level but has been introduced here through a semiquantitative discussion to explain the true sign of the Seebeck coefficient in metals (one of the most difficult graduate topics in quantum mechanics of metals). The problems have also been updated and various difficult figures have been redrafted to enhance the pedagogy. The second edition includes the Electronic Materials and Devices CD-ROM. The CD includes color overhead transparency diagrams that can be printed by instructors and students on any color printer; an illustrated dictionary of electronic materials and devices; numerous selected topics and solved problems. The text with its Selected Topics can also serve as a first course in Materials Science aimed at electrical engineers and engineering physics students. It is suitable for both one- and two-semester courses. By focusing only on those topics relevant to materials that make up electronic and optoelectronic devices, the book offers students a deeper and more meaningful discussion of this material than is offered in general materials science textbooks. The coverage is up-to-date and the applications are of special relevance to students of electronics, materials science and engineering physics.

About the Author
Peter B. Kenington is the head of advanced development at Wireless Systems International Ltd. He holds a Ph.D. in Communications Engineering from the University of Bristol.

Product Description
Based on the author's real-world design experience in this key emerging area, this is the first single comprehensive guide to examine and directly compare all major RF power amplifier linearization techniques in detail. Packed with practical tips, more than 250 illustrations, and over 600 verified equations, the book saves you valuable design time while helping you avoid costly design errors. It covers the modeling and measurement of amplifier non-linearity, and describes the main methods for overcoming non-linearity in a wide range of applications, including:

* base stations using feedforward and predistortion

* mobile communications systems and handsets using RF or digital predistortion, cartesian loop, LINC and envelope elimination and restoration (EE&R )

* satellite systems using any of these techniques

From the Author

The basic idea behind this book was to provide a single, common reference source for all of the key RF amplifier linearisation technologies currently used or in development. This allows the reader to assess their relative merits and to compare them on an equal footing, without (hopefully) a bias for or against any particular technology. The text is based upon my experience in performing research and, latterly, commercial development of RF linear amplifiers for a variety of applications in both portable and base-station equipment.

The book is aimed at both practising engineers and postgraduate researchers in the RF field. It contains detailed design methodologies for all of the main techniques, together with derivations of the key equations or results in most areas. These derivations are not relied upon in order to convey an understanding of the techniques involved, but are provided for those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the operation of the various linearisation schemes covered. It also details the key RF power amplifier design criteria which impact upon the operation of a linearisation scheme, since such systems cannot usually be considered purely in isolation.

One of the potential problems with trying to cover all of the main techniques in a single volume is in the level of detail which can be included on each. In this case, I deliberately did not compromise on design detail, and particularly not for any of the major techniques (e.g. feedforward, Cartesian loop, digital and analogue predistortion).

In summary, I believe that the book is a readable design guide to RF amplifier linearisation, covering the practical issues of realising lineariser systems, the design equations used in defining key system parameters and the theoretical background to the techniques covered. I hope you find it a valuable and enjoyable read.

Description:

The theories and techniques in this book will aid engineers in creating stronger cell phone and wireless internet signals! A majority of people now have a digital mobile device whether it be a cell phone, laptop, or blackberry. Now that we have the mobility we want it to be more versatile and dependable; RF power amplifiers accomplish just that. These amplifiers take a small input and make it stronger and larger creating a wider area of use with a more robust signal. Switching mode RF amplifiers have been theoretically possible for decades, but were largely impractical because they distort analog signals until they are unrecognizable. However, distortion is not an issue with digital signals-like those used by WLANs and digital cell phones-and switching mode RF amplifiers have become a hot area of RF/wireless design. This book explores both the theory behind switching mode RF amplifiers and design techniques for them. * Provides essential design and implementation techniques for use in cma2000, WiMAX, and other digital mobile standards * Both authors have written several articles on the topic and are well known in the industry * Includes specific design equations to greatly simplify the design of switchmode amplifiers Review "The main objective of this book is to present all relevant information required to design high-efficiency RF and microwave power amplifiers, including well-known and novel theoretical approaches and practical design techniques." - Microwave Journal, November 2007
