Fluid Structure Interactions - Slender Structures & Axial Flow

Date : February 27, 2004
Pages : 1040
Format : pdf

Quality : excelent
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0125443609
ISBN-13 :

Description:

"This book constitutes the first six chapters of what, with Volume II, is to be a text with a total of 13 chapters. The 6 chapters at hand comprise a careful and focused review of the central concern of the author's research for more than 3 decades: the problems of oscillation and general structural instability induced by the axial flow in and around pipes, the representative paradigmatic example being the "fire hose" or jet-follower instability problem.
While avoiding a claim of exhaustive treatment, the text does in fact offer a very detailed, thorough and exacting analytic and bibliographical coverage of many aspects of axial-flow pipe problems, certainly more than any other text. ... The work is clearly a labor of sustained dedication and care. The author has enlivened it in places with brief anecdotal material from practical situations. As he hints, he does not wish to risk boring the reader. He aims the text at engineers and applied mathematicians, especially researchers and practicing professionals. All of these should welcome it as an unusual, responsible, and highly valuable reference."
-Robert H. Scanlan, Journal of Fluids and Structures
"This book is the first of two volumes that focus on the fundamentals of flow-induced vibrations. Both the causes of vibrations and the symptoms are discussed, along with some long-term preventive measures. The author stresses the benefits of discovering the source of the vibration and solving the vibration problems rather than adding a buffer to reduce vibratory effects. The text begins with a general overview of the topic and a classification of flow-induced vibrations. A brief description of the contents of volume 2 is also given."
-Civil Engineering, June 1999
"a very fine book . . . not only is the scientific-technical content of high caliber, also the style of reporting is commendable, sometimes being outright funny and/or bordering on the artistic."
--Professor Geir Moe, Texas A&M, U.S.A.

Description

Total productive maintenance (TPM), a Japanese management protocol developed to alleviate production losses caused by machine breakdowns has moved on.
Through TPM, more companies accept the concept of Zero Breakdowns as achievable. From the foundation of zero breakdowns, world class plants are able to run for complete shifts without the need for intervention. TPM is still pushing back the boundaries of what was thought possible.
Driven by the proven principles of TPM, the book emphasises the need to build on existing good practices and to win commitment by delivering results.
The book provides a practical guide to delivering TPM benefits and is based on the authors' first hand experience of seeing TPM in Japan. It adapts these benefits to suit the strategic needs of companies across four continents.
TPM A Route to World Class Performance" builds on Peter Willmott's earlier book, "TPM the Western Way", updating the scope of applications and tools. The TPM route map is updated to include the journey to zero breakdowns and beyond. It also provides a systematic structure to evolve from the classic Total Productive Maintenance towards Total Productive Manufacturing and deliver a Totally Productive Operation capable of world leading performance.

Description:

Transfer function form, zpk, state space, modal, and state space modal forms. For someone learning dynamics for the first time or for engineers who use the tools infrequently, the options available for constructing and representing dynamic mechanical models can be daunting.
It is important to find a way to put them all in perspective and have them available for quick reference. It is also important to have a strong understanding of modal analysis, from which the total response of a system can be constructed.
Finally, it helps to know how to take the results of large dynamic finite element models and build small MATLAB® state space models.Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS answers all those needs.
Using a three degree-of-freedom (DOF) system as a unifying theme, it presents all the methods in one book. Each chapter provides the background theory to support its example, and each chapter contains both a closed form solution to the problem-shown in its entirety-and detailed MATLAB code for solving the problem. Bridging the gap between introductory vibration courses and the techniques used in actual practice, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS builds the foundation that allows you to simulate your own real-life problems.FeaturesoDemonstrates how to solve real problems, covering the vibration of systems from single DOF to finite element models with thousands of DOFoIllustrates the differences and similarities between different models by tracking a single example throughout the bookoIncludes the complete, closed-form solution and the MATLAB code used to solve each problemoShows explicitly how to take the results of a realistic ANSYS finite element model and develop a small MATLAB state-space modeloProvides a solid grounding in how individual modes of vibration combine for overall system response

Description:

1998 It is apposite that this book starts with a question and ends with an instruction, for although it is, above all, an educational experience, it also provides an original and open-minded view of the subject...Their overall aim is to develop a better understanding of the principles of and the links between the diverse processes underlying rock engineering. The preface tells us that the book is based on the integrated engineering rock mechanics course at Imperial College, with the first 13 chapters covering rock mechanics, chapter 14, the concept of rock engineering systems developed by John Hudson and the final six chapters, the design of engineering structures in rock.... There are two appendices, on stress and strain analysis and on stereographic projections.... The philosophy of this book...will make it a valuable adjunct, not just to students, but to anyone working in rock. It is a reasonable test of a good teacher or a good text that they explain complex concepts simply. The book passes that test cum laude. -- I.W. Farmer, Engineering Geology

Description:

Fracture mechanics is an essential tool for engineers in a number of different engineering disciplines. For example, an engineer in a metals- or plastics-dependent industry might use fracture mechanics to evaluate and characterize materials, while another in aerospace or construction might use fracture mechanics-based methods for product design and service life-time estimation. This balanced treatment, which covers both applied engineering and mathematical aspects of the topic, provides a much-needed multidisciplinary treatment of the field suitable for the many diverse applications of the subject. While texts on linear elastic fracture mechanics abound, no complete treatments of the complex topic of nonlinear fracture mechanics have been available in a textbook format - until now. Written by an author with extensive industry credentials as well as academic experience, Nonlinear Fracture Mechanics for Engineers examines nonlinear fracture mechanics and its applications in mechanics, materials testing, and life prediction of components. The book includes the first-ever complete examination of creep and creep-fatigue crack growth. Examples and problems reinforce the concepts presented. A complete chapter on applications and case studies involving nonlinear fracture mechanics completes this thorough evaluation of this dynamic field of study.

Description:

Reducing and controlling the level of vibration in a mechanical system leads to an improved work environment and product quality, reduced noise, more economical operation, and longer equipment life. Adequate design is essential for reducing vibrations, while damping and control methods help further reduce and manipulate vibrations when design strategies reach their limits. There are also useful types of vibration, which may require enhancement or control. Vibration Damping, Control, and Design balances theoretical and application-oriented coverage to enable optimal vibration and noise suppression and control in nearly any system. Drawn from the immensely popular Vibration and Shock Handbook, each expertly crafted chapter of this book includes convenient summary windows, tables, graphs, and lists to provide ready access to the important concepts and results. Working systematically from general principles to specific applications, coverage spans from theory and experimental techniques in vibration damping to isolation, passive control, active control, and structural dynamic modification. The book also discusses specific issues in designing for and controlling vibrations and noise such as regenerative chatter in machine tools, fluid-induced vibration, hearing and psychological effects, instrumentation for monitoring, and statistical energy analysis. This carefully edited work strikes a balance between practical considerations, design issues, and experimental techniques. Complemented by design examples and case studies, Vibration Damping, Control, and Design builds a deep understanding of the concepts and demonstrates how to apply these principles to real systems.

Description:

Suitable for both advanced and undergraduate students of engineering, this classic textbook explains the basic principles of the mechanics of fluids. The emphasis is on a sound physical understanding of fluid flow and its engineering applications, rather than on mathematical techniques. SI units are used throughout, and there are many worked examples. New topics for the eighth edition include the physics of tsunamis; procedures for the selection of pumps and fans; and flow losses through nozzles, orifice meters, screens, and gauzes.

The eighth edition of this best-selling textbook, like its predecessors, presents the basic principles of the mechanics of fluids in a thorough and clear manner. The book contains material on this subject appropriate to an honors degree course in mechanical engineering.

Particular emphasis is given to providing a sound physical understanding of fluid flow and its engineering applications. Relevant mathematical techniques are also covered. Students are introduced systematically to the subject, the text moving from the simple to the complex, from the familiar to the unfamiliar. SI units are used throughout and there are many worked examples. The breadth of coverage of this edition is similar to that of the previous edition, but the content has been fully revised and updated, and several new topics are introduced for the first time. For professors, a solutions manual is available to accompany this text.

Methods for Monitoring and Diagnosing the Efficiency of Catalytic Converters

Pages    : 464
Format   : PDF
OCR      : Y
Quality  :
Language : English
ISBN-10  : 0444829520
ISBN-13  :

Description:

The dramatic evolution of catalytic converters in the last thirty years was a result of a need worldwide to reduce pollution created by the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines. Environmental concerns have led American, Japanese and European Union (EU) legislation to pose continuously stricter emission limits for petrol engines in the last decades. The catalytic converter has become the most important means of exhaust treatment to achieve the desired emission limits. The international legislation has also created a need for a regular assessment of the efficiency of the catalytic converter in order to detect a deterioration of its conversion efficiency as soon as this deterioration takes place. The assessment of conversion efficiency of a catalytic converter can take place during normal driving of a vehicle (on-board diagnosis or OBD) or in a workshop by specialized technicians. The most important methods nowadays are the OBD methods. The evolution of methods concerned with OBD and non-OBD monitoring and diagnosing of efficiency of catalytic converters of internal combustion engines is described based on patents and published patent applications. Non-patent references are also used. The basic principles of modern catalytic converters are described in an extensive Introduction, where the importance of monitoring and diagnosing the efficiency of catalytic converters is demonstrated.

The book is divided into four parts. The first part describes methods involving the use of oxygen or air/fuel exhaust gas sensors to determine the oxygen storage capacity of a catalytic converter. The second part describes methods involving the use of temperature sensors to determine the exothermic reaction capacity of a catalytic converter. The third part describes all other methods existing in patent literature that monitor and diagnose the efficiency of catalytic converters. The great majority of the methods of the third part involves exhaust gas concentration measurements. The fourth part comprises a general discussion of all methods described.

In the beginning of each part, a short introduction is given to explain the problem that the methods attempt to solve. The methods in each part are presented in chronological order per patent applicant. This helps to evaluate how the patent applicant has improved his methods over time. A patent number index with information about the patent applicants, inventors, priorities and patent-families, an inventor index, a company index and a subject index can be found at the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Good reference book., November 6, 2001
By     "gonzo_442" (CHERRYVILLE, PA USA) - See all my reviews
Like the rest of Haynes' manuals, concise and to the point. Well written and good layout as well. As noted above by others, it's divided off into chapters each covers first the history and theory behind the various types of welding, and then a general walk-through of the use. It covers the basics from someone who's walking into welding cold (er, bad pun, sorry) not necessarily a handbook for a welding student. In its defense, this is admitted within its pages. Still i found it to be a useful addition to my shop library. It was interesting reading, as well as a good primer for someone who is looking into starting up a welding rig. If you think you're ready to buy your first welder, i recommend you take a look at this. Well worth the couple of bucks. One last point, as with all technical books, keep an eye out for the newest editions. Advancements are always making tech manuals slightly out of date.

Description:

Rotating machinery is the heart of many industrial operations, but many engineers and technicians perform shaft alignment by guesswork or with limited knowledge of the tools and methods available to accurately and effectively align their machinery. Two decades ago, John Piotrowski conferred upon the field an unprecedented tool: the first edition of the Shaft Alignment Handbook. Two editions later, this bestselling handbook is still the most trusted and widely embraced guide in the field. The third edition was reorganized, updated, and expanded to be more convenient, intuitive, and to reflect the latest developments in the area. Dedicated chapters now discuss the basics of alignment modeling, each of the five basic alignment methods, and electro-optic methods. Significant new material reflects recent findings on detecting misalignment, machinery movement from offline to running conditions, multiple element drive trains, and specific information on virtually every type of rotating machinery in existence. Entirely new chapters explore bore and parallel alignment. Providing detailed guidance based on years of hands-on experience, the Shaft Alignment Handbook, Third Edition is a practical tool to help avoid costly shutdowns, dangerous failures, and early replacements.

Description:

With advances driven by pressure from governments, environmental activists, and its associated industries, the subject of electric and hybrid vehicles is becoming increasingly important. Trends clearly suggest that we must educate the engineers of today and tomorrow in the technical details of these vehicles. While there are many books that provide narrative descriptions of electric and hybrid vehicle components, none cover the technical aspects from a mathematically derived, design point of view, and none serve well as a textbook.Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Design Fundamentals presents a comprehensive, systems-level perspective of these vehicles that strikes an outstanding balance between technical details, design equations, numerical examples, and case studies. Starting with some historic background, the author describes the system components, the laws of physics governing vehicle motion, the mathematical relationships within and between the components, energy sources, and designing components to meet the complete vehicle specifications. As this text illustrates, the electric vehicle is an excellent example of electro-mechanical and electro-chemical systems, one that is technically challenging as well as highly motivating to engineering students. The material presented is designed to be covered comfortably in a one-semester course. Its multidisciplinary nature and systems approach makes Electric and Hybrid Vehicles ideal for teaching electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineers all in one course.
